Door Mats, Memories and Moving Forward

When I published my first blog (in July 2019), I began with this story and photo:

I love going out, door-to-door and meeting my constituents. I also love seeing how people individualize their homes. I first saw this mat several years ago, and it made me smile. I knew that whoever would put out such a fun door mat would have a great sense of humor, and I had a wonderful conversation with the gentleman who answered the door.

He said he was disappointed that his girlfriend wasn't home because he knew she would have loved to meet me and chat about issues of importance to her.

The next day, I was walking down a main street in that same neighborhood, and a car that had passed me, backed up and approached me. The woman who was driving rolled down her window to ask if I was Ellen. It turned out, she was the woman who I had missed chatting with the day before. Even though we were in the middle of the street, we had a great chat about her issues, and through the years, we've continued our discussion.

In May, I was in a meeting with a constituent who I had not met before. She told me that her sister also lives in my Assembly district and speaks highly of me. I'll be you can guess who her sister is -- and yes, she was impressed that I still had the photo of the door mat and remembered the story that I just shared with you.

As I thought about re-starting my blog, I realized that it is fitting bo begin moving forward using that post. One thing I've learned through the years, is that whether it's in business or in politics, people want to hire (or elect) people they feel they know, like and respect. By including others in my personal journey, they get to know me, see my values and how I apply them.

I've also updated and included some past Facebook posts (with their original posting dates), which I thought you'd enjoy.

I hope you learn from my stories see how you can use them for yourself.
